We were hosting the Christmas holiday at our house this year, and I couldn’t be happier. We planned to have a house filled with people, so here we were, as a party of four at the grocery store getting all the things that I needed to cook our family dinner.

I laughed to myself because there was a big football game on tonight, yet I’d managed to get both Rodney and Jr from the television screen so that they could come shopping with me. I swear I couldn’t wait until Riley got a little older because if I let them, Rodney and Jr would sit in front of the TV all day watching football. They had the same look on their faces, which was of pure annoyance, and which showed that they would rather be anywhere right now than this crowded ass grocery store.

There were so many people in the store that we pretty much had to squeeze into each aisle that we went down. I knew that the chances of running into someone I knew in there was very high. Rodney, who was too busy watching the game from his phone, had been bumping into damn near every person that he passed because that phone had all of his attention.

When I say that my husband loved football, I truly meant that with every fiber of my being, which is why I felt bad about him choosing to turn down the offer to be a head coach. But, like he said, I was sure that bigger and better opportunities would be granted to him. This was the same man who wouldn’t leave the park until each of his players were in a car and on their way home. The same man who I had watched get up in the middle of the night to bring one of his players some food because out of all the people that that little boy could have called, he called Rodney to let him know that he hadn’t eaten all day.

When Rodney went over to the boy’s house, he found out that his mother had just been laid off the week before, so my husband took it upon himself to pay the electric bill in the house because the lights were out, give her money for groceries, and helped out with whatever they needed.

That was just the type of person that Rodney was. It could be pouring raining, and he and Jr could be outside with only one umbrella. Instead of them sharing it like most people would, Rodney would choose to get soaking wet to make sure that not a drop of water got on his son. I truly felt like that position as head coach for the university was very minor compared to all the bigger blessings that God was getting ready to send his way.

“This is the last aisle, baby, and then we can go,” I let Rodney know as we walked into the dairy aisle.
